About this location

Emergency shelter became permanent community — and a school donated to the people who needed it.

BG opened in Nyamira in 2008 in direct response to children orphaned by Kenya’s post-election violence, in coordination with the Red Cross. Emergency shelter evolved into a stable residential community of family-style homes — maximum 10 children per home.

In 2013, BG built a primary school and donated it to the surrounding community. Today it serves 750+ children — including the first adapted classroom for children with intellectual disabilities in western Kenya.

The school was renovated in 2017 and now serves 300+ students. The shelter cares for approximately 30 residential children. The outreach program visits vulnerable families every two weeks.

A sponsorship at BG Malindi costs €40/month — school fees, three daily meals, healthcare, accommodation, and social worker support.
